Term 3 may be underway, but we’re still buzzing from our two amazing July school holiday programs – PLAY DANCE SING! MOANA! and PLAY in 3 Days.
In the first week of the school holidays, we worked with our friends at Aurora Dance Studio to produce an awesome piece of musical theatre from the much-loved Disney classic, Moana. We started off on Monday with the juniors, ages 5 to 7, who wowed us with You’re Welcome. Then from Tuesday to Thursday, the over 7s were hard at work to bring a full-scale musical number to life.
Performers learned acting and vocal technique with Nickie, while Shannon from Aurora Dance got toes tapping with some killer choreography. At the end of the workshop, parents, friends and family came to see the final result, and were well and truly blown away.
But week one didn’t end there! On Friday, we ventured into Christchurch to see Moana Jr. at The Court Theatre. After the show, we bussed back to Aurora Dance Studio for a pizza party and some impromptu performances of Moana (and Cotton Eyed Joe from the boys!). We finished the day with games, dancing, and acting out our favourite movies.
In the second week of the school holidays, we let our imaginations run wild to make an original piece of devised theatre with PLAY in 3 Days. From Tuesday to Thursday, students developed ideas as a group to create a brand new production. Doctor Doctor told the tale of a weird and wacky hospital where reindeer were removed from patients’ stomachs, splinters were the ultimate emergency, and not even warm orange juice could cure the unicorn plague.
Our story came to a thrilling conclusion in the hospital cafeteria with a patient going into labour and a jaw-dropping reveal: the janitor was an undercover boss the whole time! Doctor Doctor hit the stage on Thursday to rave reviews from family and friends.
Well done to everyone who took part in our school holiday programs! We’re looking forward to seeing you all in Term 3 for more adventures with PLAY Drama.
