Term 4 is upon us, and the end of a fabulous year at PLAY is approaching fast! Time to take a look back at the October School Holidays with PLAY in 3 Days, PLAY! Create, and PLAY DANCE SING.
The first week of the school holidays was super in more ways than one. From Tuesday to Thursday, our group of student superheroes took their thrilling tale from the page to the stage at PLAY in 3 Days. Heroes and villains faced off, displaying amazing abilities like time travel, super speed, invisibility, talking to lamp posts – and of course, the power of science!
But our superhero shenanigans didn’t stop there! On Friday, it was the juniors time to be heroes with two great sessions of PLAY! Create. Our junior superheroes designed and created their own masks, put together fabulous crime-fighting outfits with capes and flew around the studio. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the heroes at PLAY! Create – isn’t it nice to know that Selwyn is in good hands?
Every good superhero team needs a captain and PLAY is no exception. PLAY’s fearless leader Nickie has been busy as always throughout Term 3 with Centrestage Rolleston’s production of Legally Blonde Jr. After the August lockdown and alert levels changing, it was a huge relief for cast and crew that the show did indeed go on and performances were able to go ahead in Level 2. All of the young performers did amazingly, performing 5 shows over 3 days. Congratulations to everyone involved – oh my god, you guys!
In week 2, PLAY collaborated once again with Aurora Dance Studio for PLAY DANCE SING. Since Nickie and Shannon were both involved in Legally Blonde, this school holidays we ran three one-off workshops from Wednesday to Friday instead of a three-day intensive.
PLAY DANCE SING is an opportunity for students to develop their skills in three genres: vocals, dance, and musical theatre. Students learned vocal technique from Nickie and choreography from Shannon, then with their powers combined finished things off with a combined musical theatre workshop to focus on performance and character. The intermediates group studied Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’, while the seniors studied Opening Up from Waitress.
A big thank you and congratulations to everyone who took part in our school holiday workshops! The end of the year is approaching faster than a speeding bullet, so here’s to an amazing Term 4 at PLAY Drama.
